Sandown Hillside will play host to a nine race card on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:00) Ladbrokes Hcp 1000m
4 Repeal (Bet Now: $2.60 TOP ODDS) is a son of Capitalist for Team Snowden that resumes. Has only had one career outing, which came in December at Warwick Farm when down the track behind Ranch Hand, a horse I do have time for, so the form is okay I think and he has jumped out well to get ready.
2 Qeyaady (Bet Now: $2.80 TOP ODDS) is several weeks between runs since resuming with a strong on speed win at this track/distance. What I liked about the win is that he was there to be run down, and given he was fresh, he was entitled to perhaps fade late, but he found under pressure and kicked on to win. He’ll land on speed and give a sight.
I reckon back to 1000m is a big tick for 1 Gulf Of Suez (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS). They tried to get him to a Blue Diamond, which didn’t work, and really, the overall prep has been odd with no real planning towards it from the outside. But, his best efforts have come over the short course so back to 1000m I do like.
Race 2. (12:35) Clanbrooke Racing (bm78) 1000m
Stack of speed engaged, which I think suits 8 Harlem Blues (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) for Team Snowden. This three year old appreciated a fast speed when winning at this track/distance last time out in a race similar to this. Looks to be more speed engaged, so he will get his chance to sit off and launch late.
10 Modear (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is the interesting runner. It was a very plain ride I thought from Williams at Bendigo last time. This is a mare who likes to get to the outside and wind into her work. He chose to ride for luck between runners and the mare didn’t get a chance to build proper momentum. If she’s within range 400m out, she can win without surprising.
1 Mister Mogul (Bet Now: $34.00 TOP ODDS) can be a big improver here. Due to his rating, he’s had to step up in grade/depth and he just hasn’t measured up at all, albeit in races which have been lengths stronger compared to this. Last three runs at 78 grade has seen him win two and place in another, so this is his level.
Race 3. (13:10) Ive > Print (bm84) 1300m
5 Cordilla (Bet Now: $2.35 TOP ODDS) has upside and progression, so she’s a leading contender. Didn’t handle the bottomless track fresh on All Star Mile Day behind Exeter. Freshened up and ran at Caulfield where the steer from Will Price was a beauty. Landed in a beaut spot, wide with cover, had full momentum and was too good in wearing down Rainbiel. Can only improve off that and is hard to beat.
Patrick Payne has 8 Sig Positano (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) absolutely flying at the moment. He has won his past three, all coming at 1200m, with two of them at Pakenham, including last start, where he was really dominant when clicked up and off that performance, the extra 100m here should be no issue.
2 My Pendant (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS) can be a definite improver here for Danny O’Brien. Resumed a few weeks ago at Caulfield and while she was never really a winning threat, didn’t mind her finale behind stablemate Cordilla. Might need one more, but has class and gets in pretty well after the claim.
Race 4. (13:45) Ladbroke It (bm84) 2400m
9 Johandough (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS) is flying and with her racing pattern, I think she can take this out. Ran two weeks ago in the Gold Heath and I think you could easily make a case to say she should have won had she got clear running from the outset. She’ll land on speed here, likely in front, and prove hard to run down.
3 Grand Promenade (Bet Now: $2.25 TOP ODDS) should love the rise to 2400m. Three weeks between runs since racing over 2000m at Caulfield…how he didn’t win remains a mystery of life. He was there to put them away but couldn’t quite get past Independent Road in a close photo finish. Hard fit now, up in trip, he’s one of the hardest to beat.
7 Bondi Sands (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS) has upside and progression. Danny O’Brien trained former import that has had two runs this prep and looks a likely type. Toughed it out best to win and beat Blue Ocean, who did win last Saturday, so the form reads okay. He’s got upside and gets good weight relief.
Race 5. (14:20) Ladbrokes Bet Ticker Hcp 1400m
Bludger of a race, so I’ll side with class, which is with 1 Sircconi (Bet Now: $6.50), resuming for Nick Ryan. Hasn’t raced since the Toorak in the Spring when pulling up lame in both front legs when down the track behind Mr Quickie. Jumped out well on Tuesday to my eye and has a bit on these re class. Just want a market push.
7 Dice Roll (Bet Now: $3.00) commands respect. Former Hong Kong galloper that had his first run for Nick Ryan two weeks back and the market found him, into $7.50 from double figures and he was impressive in getting the job done. He’s got more to come and this is a very thin open handicap.
3 Yulong January (Bet Now: $3.70) is a two time second up winner and can be a big improver here. Resumed several weeks ago at Caulfield in the VOBIS Sprint. Ridden cold from the gate and found the line pretty well behind Laverrod. He can settle on speed and that is no disadvantage on this track.
Race 6. (15:00) Ladbrokes Punter Assist-bm78 1300m
5 Charleise (Bet Now: $3.00) has found winning form and she could well go on with it now. Thought the ride from Cartwright last time out was an absolute peach and the mare duly did the right thing in dashing clear late, winning by three, which I think flattered her rivals. Keen to see if she can go on with it.
10 Garvoc (Bet Now: $9.50) has done a really good job since joining the Price/Kent yard. Walker probably missed the boat when the mare raced here a few weeks back, but in saying that, she wasn’t going well enough to trouble Cordilla/Rainbiel. She is consistent, should be around the mark and is a key threat.
Back to 78 grade, 14 Bons Abroard (Bet Now: $5.50) is a definite winning threat. She ran in the Distaff two weeks ago and closed off strongly from the back behind the heavily supported Thousand Wishes. Has a liking for Sandown and that race carried far more depth than what she faces here. Likeable.
Race 7. (15:40) Ladbrokes Same Race Multi-bm70 1300m
11 Transplant (Bet Now: $5.50) looks a talented filly for the McEvoy camp and I think she can make it 2/2 this prep. Resumed off a 48 week break when leading throughout and bolting up over 1200m in a Kilmore maiden. That track looked horrendous to the eye with kickback so it was a case of handling it or not, and she did so in spades. She’s always showed good talent so hopefully she can go on with it.
3 River Night (Bet Now: $6.00) has the form around her to give this a shake. Ran in the VOBIS Gold Dash at Caulfield two weeks ago and battled on quite well without much clear air late in the piece when fourth to La Mexicana, a form line which clearly reads well for a race like this, so she’s hard to beat.
10 Standoff (Bet Now: $14.00) is on the quick back up after resuming last Saturday at Caulfield. Got a fair way back in the run off a hot speed and was somewhat run off her legs, but didn’t mind her finale behind Intrepidacious. Back to her own age/sex and up in trip, she appeals against these.
Race 8. (16:20) Ladbrokes Switch (bm84) 1700m
The talent is certainly there with 2 Somerset Maugham (Bet Now: $6.00). When he won a sequence of races in the Spring, he looked quite a progressive horse. Resumed at Caulfield behind Dice Roll and just got too far back, but his finale was sound enough for a horse wanting further, which he gets here.
7 Spring Choice (Bet Now: $3.80) should love the rise to 1700m. Has had two runs at 1400m to start the prep. Good in defeat fresh behind Shandy before racing two weeks back at Caulfield and just raced a bit flat but was still sound behind Dice Roll. Gets to a more suitable trip and has more upside than most.
3 Approach Discreet (Bet Now: $5.00) would love a drop of rain to hit the track but I think regardless, Adrian McGregor has him in super order and is in for a fruitful prep I think. Resumed over 1400m two weeks back at Caulfield and I loved the way he found the line late when fourth to Dice Roll. Might need one more and rain, but he’s a winning threat.
Race 9. (16:55) Ladbrokes Easy Form Hcp 1000m
5 Thudson (Bet Now: $3.70) looks to have returned in really good order. Resumed over 1000m at Bendigo where he was somewhat unwanted late in betting but it did not matter because he gave them a proper spanking and ran sharp time in doing so. His best efforts have come at 1000m and against his own age here, he’ll take beating.
10 Sweetzou (Bet Now: $4.20) is on the seven day back up for John Sadler after racing last Saturday at Caulfield. She took on the Mares when tucked in behind a genuine speed and battled on pretty well in defeat I thought when fourth to talented mare Intrepidacious. Stable just having a slightly lean run compared to a month or so ago, but she’s filly with talent and appeals back to her own age.
15 Rose Quartz (Bet Now: $9.00) looks a handy filly for Grahame Begg. Extremely short in betting when debuting over 1100m at Bendigo. Was wide no cover, but one turn, so not a major issue. Knuckled down when required and was too good. Off what I’ve seen to date, I think she’s a short course galloper so the 1000m suits.
