The smell of Autumn is in the air at Randwick on Saturday, with a nine race card assembled, headlined by a crack field in the Group ll Expressway Stakes (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:55) WIDDEN STAKES 1100m
5 September Run (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a definite contender for me. Big fan of this filly despite the form guide saying she beat just two home in the Inglis Nursery on debut, but she lost her compass on the turn and lost all hope. But her late splits when balanced up were very good. Been given a little break and has trialled up quite well leading in.
1 Away Game (Bet Now: $2.15 TOP ODDS) has the runs on the board having won the Magic Millions, where I thought the ride from Luke Currie was an absolute peach. Got into the fast lane, three wide with cover, and once he pushed the button on her, it was race over. Good little test to confirm she’s indeed a high seed re Golden Slipper.
3 In Flanders (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a James Cummings trained filly that had market support at odds when resuming at Rosehill two weeks ago and while she was well held by Cellsabeel, she did make up ground late and was good in running second. Does no work from the inside gate and does have the hard recent run under the belt.
Race 2. (13:30) CANONBURY STAKES 1100m
Giving 3 Return With Honour (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) another chance. Showed really good sustained speed to win on debut at Randwick over 1100m before racing over 1100m at Rosehill two weeks ago and struggling on the bog surface, plus was slow to recover, behind Cellsabeel. That form is A1 for 2YO’s this season, and back on top of the ground, he’s a big improver.
1 Global Quest (Bet Now: $2.40 TOP ODDS) is a huge yard/market watch. Chris Waller trains this colt, who hasn’t raced since debuting with a strong win from off the pace in the Breeders Plate, tipped out soon after. Has had two trials in readiness and the first trial, IMO, was clearly better than the second trial, and the form out of the Breeders Plate, for the second year in a row, is looking suspect. Watch the market and how he parades.
5 Prague (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Redoute’s Choice for the in form Maher/Eustace camp that debuted over 1200m at Canterbury and admittedly was helped by the track pattern, but still had to take advantage of it and he did, winning impressively under Tommy Berry. Clearly more depth here and back to 1100m isn’t ideal, but he looks above average.
Race 3. (14:05) TAB HIGHWAY PLATE 1500m
3 Harbouring (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) on top for me in the Highway. Rod Northam trains this gelding, who hasn’t raced since November 24 when winning impressively at Quirindi, which followed a placing behind But I Know in a Highway which has produced seven other winners, so the form reads well and 1500m first up tells me enough residual fitness is in the legs. Nash rides as well.
1 Greenspan (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) is a little query at a strong 1500m, but concede he’s going well and with the claim for Billy Owen, he’s very likeable. Four weeks between runs since contesting a Highway on the Kenso when unlucky, finishing second to Denmiss. Get a soft run from the gate, in form and has to be regarded as a leading contender.
8 Alot To Hoffa (Bet Now: $20.00 TOP ODDS) has been a really good story for Ben Blay. Outstanding first up win on debut at Tuncurry before being wide no cover at Muswellbrook. Raced there again, Mikayla Weir jumped back on and he let down hard late to get up and win over the 1450m. She remains on and with her claim, he’s really well in at the weights.
Race 4. (14:40) ATC MEMBERS RECOGNITION 1500m
8 Night Of Power (Bet Now: $3.20 TOP ODDS) should be close to peak fitness for Bjorn Baker. Was 1250m straight to 1550m on a bog track at Canterbury last time out and while the margin was only narrow, gee there was merit to it given that set up mentioned and he had to lump 60kg. Tumbles to 53kg, lands near the front and should take a power of beating.
5 Romani Girl (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) looks to have found a lovely race. Thought she was quite good two back at Randwick behind Taniko before going to the Magic Millions F&M and closed her race off strongly to run third to classy stablemate Invincibella. That form is surely A1 for this and she gets a great chance to get back into the winners list. Just wants the tempo to be even and not a crawl.
6 Insensata (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) isn’t the most reliable horse going around but a win here wouldn’t totally shock because she does have the potential. Ran in the Chester Manifold three weeks ago at Flemington when back off the speed and seemed to have every chance behind Amadeus, beaten three lengths. Not sure that’s the strongest form here, but back at home, up to 1500m, this girl can improve.
Race 5. (15:15) SKY RACING ACTIVE HCP 1400m
Going to give 9 Fasano (Bet Now: $11.00) another chance here. Was keen on him running well first up over 1300m at Rosehill two weeks ago but the very slow tempo in front just didn’t suit him at all and he couldn’t dash well enough behind Enfleurage, but the run was still good in defeat. Up in trip on firmer footing, I think he’ll run a much improved race.
8 Subpoenaed (Bet Now: $1.80) is a huge query here. Quality filly for Chris Waller that resumes, having not raced since the Edward Manifold in the Spring at Flemington when down the track behind Moonlight Maid after sitting wide throughout. Been given a good break, has trialled well leading in and does have class on her side.
7 Rari (Bet Now: $4.40) lacks the class of some of these, but he does have ticker and hard race fitness under the belt. Sat on speed last time out at the midweeks at Warwick Farm and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off and was beaten late by Chat. Has the right racing pattern to give himself every chance of winning and doesn’t mind having a go when challenged.
Race 6. (15:50) SCHWEPPES HANDICAP 2000m
4 Costello (Bet Now: $6.00) gets the nod. David Payne trains this four year old, who resumed over 1500m at Rosehill a fortnight back and really liked the way he found the line late when a fast finishing second to Bandersnatch, and would have won in another stride. Jumps to 2000m with Bossy aboard and his second up record is outstanding, with the lone second up defeat coming last prep when second to Dr Drill, who at the time was flying.
Chris Waller has blacktype plans in place for 8 Birth Of Venus (Bet Now: $4.40) so keen to see her here again at the ten furlongs, the trip she won at two weeks ago when well specked at odds and she slogged it out best in the conditions to score. Her last couple of runs have been really encouraging and I think she can go on with it.
Back to 2000m I do like for the Chris Waller trained 1 Guise (Bet Now: $11.00). Stable were 50/50 on her at 2400m and last start, three weeks ago behind Dark Pearl, confirmed that she indeed doesn’t see out twelve furlongs, and was found to be lame post race, so back to 2000m with the gap between runs I like. Does she have upside? Probably not, but prior form was sound.
Race 7. (16:30) EXPRESSWAY STAKES 1200m
5 Alizee (Bet Now: $2.20) looks hard to beat. Star mare for James Cummings that is looking to defend her crown from last year, where she gave them an absolute spanking on a bog track. Could make a case that she is the most lethal first up horse in Australia and she looks ready to rock and roll off her trial last week at Warwick Farm where she was trucking in the straight behind Nature Strip. Just where she gets to from the gate is the knock.
Really keen to see 9 Standout (Bet Now: $5.00) resume for Gerald Ryan. High quality three year old that had an outstanding Spring prep to start his career, including a Stakes win in the Heritage. His two trials leading in have been outstanding and the thing potentially going for him here is that he lands on speed, and has change up speed.
6 White Moss (Bet Now: $13.00) is a ripping mare for Jason Coyle that is first up and she looks primed to run well fresh. Has had two trials in readiness for her return, the most recent at Warwick Farm behind Nature Strip and gee she looked to go beautifully. If she can take advantage of gate one, I think she’ll take a power of beating.
Race 8. (17:10) RANVET HANDICAP 1400m
1 Royal Tudor (Bet Now: $8.00) has to be rated highly here. He ran over 1350m at Rosehill two weeks ago and while he only beat two home in a field of seven behind No Escape, I think you could easily make a case that he should have won. Just had no luck in the straight when seemingly bolting. Up to 1400m on firmer footing and fitter, he’ll take some beating.
The way I’m seeing things, 6 Destiny’s Own (Bet Now: $5.00) is wound right up for this. Formerly with Gerald Ryan, the gelding is now with Matty Smith. Last raced here on December 11 and was disappointing I thought behind Excellent Proposal. Has had two 1200m trials since and has looked great each time, so I’ll give him another chance.
For wider multiples, I’d be including the Gratz Vella trained mare 10 Levee Bank (Bet Now: $15.00), who ran over 1200m at Warwick Farm last time where she was never really a winning threat given how far back she was in the run but finished off with real purpose to run fifth and clocked the best late splits of the race. If the tempo is genuine here, I think she’ll be a threat at big odds.
Race 9. (17:50) HYLAND RACE COLOURS HCP 1200m
Was hard to miss the first up run of 9 River Bird (Bet Now: $8.00) over 1100m at Rosehill a fortnight back. She was one of the runs of the day, closing off with real purpose from the back to run a close up second to an in form Embracer. Suited up to 1200m and can sit closer in the run if need. Has to be regarded as one of the hardest to beat here.
Good little test for 12 Lashes (Bet Now: $4.20) but she does look to have come back in super order this time in. Things fell into place first up on the Kenso track but she took advantage and bolted up. Then raced over 1100m at Rosehill two weeks when getting the dream run off a slow speed, getting the inside split and dashing clear. Harder here, but she’s earned a crack.
4 Laburnum (Bet Now: $14.00) deserves another chance. Her trial was outstanding but she wasn’t extended over the 735m, so 1100m at Rosehill first up on a bog track with that lack of fitness was always going to be against her and that’s how it panned out behind Embracer. Much better suited here on firmer footing and fitter, so she deserves another look.
