An eight race card has been assembled for Morphettville this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:21) Adelaide Galvanising Handicap 1200m
4 Lunar Light (Bet Now: $2.25) to continue her winning ways. I know Will Clarken has blacktype plans for this filly so if she’s indeed to get to that level, she’d want to be putting this lot away. Tough maiden win first up at Strathalbyn before going to Murray Bridge two weeks ago against the older horses and loved the way she put them away when asked by Pannell. Confident she goes close to beating these.
1 Picargo (Bet Now: $3.70) is on the seven day back up for Ryan Balfour after racing over 1200m last Saturday at Gawler where he was off the bit on the turn and seemingly struggling but picked up and got close to beating boom filly Just Zerene. That form has to be rated highly for this. The knock with him is does he want 1400m now?
A rise in trip and a drop in overall depth should suit the Team McEvoy filly 2 Ruler By Choice (Bet Now: $4.40), who was far from disgraced two back over 1400m at Flemington before coming back to 1100m at Caulfield when back in the run and was never a winning threat behind How Womantic, who franked that form at the Valley. Hard to beat on prior form.
Race 2. (13:56) Furphy 3YO Maiden Plate 1500m
2 Bludog (Bet Now: $5.00) on top. This is a first starter for Ryan Balfour who has had two jumpouts in readiness for start one. Latest came here on Tuesday and really liked the way he moved from off the pace and seemingly had something up the sleeve. Not the strongest maiden I’ve seen, so he doesn’t need to be anything special to be competitive.
4 Grinzinger Brew (Bet Now: $4.40) should improve off the resumption at Oakbank, his first run for Karen Byrnes. He was a significant drifter in betting when resuming at Oakbank, showing good early toe and fought on okay in defeat when third to Exalted Zoe. Back in trip and onto a bigger track are ticks for him, so keen to see how he goes.
6 Oolong Gaze (Bet Now: $3.80) has had a few chances to break the maiden tag, but in saying that, the depth has been far stronger in those races compared to what he faces here. Hasn’t raced since Boxing Day when down the track behind Fortune Follows. Been given a little break, finds a relatively thin maiden…a win wouldn’t totally shock.
Race 3. (14:31) AAMI Maiden Plate 1600m
When it comes to tricky races on wet ground, I default to wet track breeding, so with that, I’m with 1 Plympton (Bet Now: $10.00). By Congrats out of a Blevic mare, he should handle it based on breeding and lone soft track run was a beauty. Last start came on Sunday at Murray Bridge when well held by Al Ma Belle but did make up good ground late. Can sit closer from gate one and prove hard to beat.
4 Portamaggieore (Bet Now: $2.45) is on the quick back up for the in form Travis Doudle team after attempting to lead all the way at Murray Bridge on Sunday and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off and had to settle for second to Al Ma Belle. Looks the leader again and with only 54kg on his back, he’ll run a cheeky race I’m sure.
Up to 1600m should really suit the Macdonald/Gluyas trained 5 Staying Strong (Bet Now: $7.00), who ran over 1350m at Strathalbyn last time and while on paper the run doesn’t read to great, there was merit to it. Not sure the tight track was to his liking and he was back in a race dominated by those on speed. He’ll eat up extra ground and be strong at the end.
Race 4. (15:06) Schweppes Handicap 1050m
2 Ready Sunshine (Bet Now: $6.50) is three weeks between runs for Ryan Balfour since racing over 1000m at Murray Bridge and while he was beaten over six lengths into third by Just Zerene (won since), she had a six length gap on the second horse, and Ready Sunshine came from near last, so the run was very good and the depth here is nowhere near as strong. Jumpout on Tuesday here was quite good also.
5 Always Sacred (Bet Now: $4.00) is on the quick back up for Grant Young after racing at Murray Bridge on Sunday when tucked in behind the speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite get there when second to Fabulous Flipper. Gets a soft run from the draw again and like the booking of Stubby. Think he’s a knockout chance at odds.
The heavy track form with 9 Florid (Bet Now: $13.00) is a touch misleading. Three starts for a win, which came at the Provincials at Newcastle when trained by Godolphin, the other two runs being in Sydney in good races. Hasn’t really fired a shot since coming to SA, but a wet track will bring some of these back to him and he is a winner on heavy ground.
Race 5. (15:41) Holdfast Insurance Handicap 2038m
Bit of a nothing race but on top is 8 Liberty Lover (Bet Now: $4.50), who is four weeks between runs since racing at Gawler where she loomed large to win the race after a good run in transit but couldn’t sustain it and had to settle for third to Barbie’s Boy. Remains down in the weights after the claim and is knocking on the door to win a race. Gets her chance here.
2 Diamonds Are (Bet Now: $2.50) is the one to beat on form, clearly. Has finished runner up at her past two, the latest coming two weeks ago over the mile at Murray Bridge behind the enigma that is Roselli Sting. The trip is an unknown with her, but this is a very winnable race if she can see the distance out well enough.
10 Trooper’s Ploy (Bet Now: $13.00) is a John Hickmott trained gelding had specking at odds when racing over 1700m at Gawler last Saturday but just got a bit keen in the run and couldn’t dash well enough but was still good in defeat behind Allusion. Up in trip is interesting, but this race has no depth so despite a wide gate, I think he’s among the chances.
Race 6. (16:21) TAB Handicap 1200m
3 Oh Mo (Bet Now: $4.60) for me. I thought he was massive in defeat two weeks ago at Murray Bridge where he was first up. His fate was sealed at the start when rearing as the gates opened and really did a remarkable job to get as close as he did, beaten just under three lengths. Provided he jumps cleanly, I think he’ll run a beauty here at likely decent odds.
7 Just Chipping Away (Bet Now: $2.60) had good specking when racing over 1200m at Murray Bridge a fortnight back and if you were on, you would have thought your ticket was confetti halfway through the race when she was five wide on speed but kept finding and was only bloused late by Two Odd Sox. Provided that hasn’t busted her, she’s right in the mix.
5 First Kiss (Bet Now: $8.00) may want a touch further than this but I reckon Phillip Stokes has her going well. Good resumption over 1200m here behind Bolt I Am before racing at this trip at Murray Bridge where she was a bit flat footed when the sprint went on but was more than sound late. Racing as if she wants further than this trip, so may spot them a start but will be strong at the end.
Race 7. (17:01) Chapel Hill Handicap 1600m
He’s a bludger is 10 Bwuva (Bet Now: $1700), but his wet track stats are outstanding and is hard fit. Was three weeks between runs when racing at Gawler last Saturday when racing a touch keen behind the speed and that took away his finale I feel behind Bajan. Gets onto a track with give in it, remains down in the weights and up to the mile should suit.
6 Ethical Solution (Bet Now: $3.20) is flying for Travis Doudle and though a slight query at 1600m, she does have good form on wet ground and remains right down in the weights after the claim for Lachie Neindorf, who rode the filly a treat when winning at Murray Bridge two weeks ago in impressive fashion. Just has to tick the 1600m box.
4 Sir Garfield (Bet Now: $6.50) is on the seven day back up for Gordon Richards after racing at Murray Bridge on Sunday over 1400m when on speed under Pannell and he looked to have his chance when a close up third to Sky Punch in a race which had depth to it. Up in trip I don’t mind, gets good weight relief and despite the form guide saying he hates wet ground, he is bred to swim. Want to give him a chance on it.
Race 8. (17:41) Medallion Homes Handicap 1050m
5 Westport (Bet Now: $3.30) is a talented daughter of Not A Single Doubt for the McEvoy camp that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the Edward Manifold during the Spring in Melbourne when down the track behind Moonlight Maid. I think 1200m-1400m is her go in life, has class on a few of these and looked good in a recent jumpout.
2 Enigman (Bet Now: $3.50) drops a fair bit in grade/depth here after racing over 1200m at Randwick six weeks ago when near the speed and trying hard but couldn’t go on with it in the straight when down the track behind Taniko. Been given a little freshen up, handles wet ground and does drop a bit in depth here, so he’s likeable.
9 Mum’s My Hero (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Craig Curtis trained mare who is racing really well this time in. Ran over 1000m at Murray Bridge three weeks where she tried her guts out but was clearly no match for Just Zerene, who franked the form by winning again last Saturday at Gawler. Gets down to 51kg after the claim, lands near the speed and handles wet ground.
