Champion Irish trainer Dermot Weld may have unearthed a potential contender for this year’s Melbourne Cup in the form of Unaccompanied.
Unaccompanied, a mare by Danehill Dancer, was a dominant winner of the Listed Alleged Stakes (1m2f) overnight.
Sent out a 4-1 second favourite, Unaccompanied defeated 33-1 shot Cilium.
Long odds on favourite St Nicholas Abbey finished a disappointing third.
Weld says the mare will continue to be a dual purpose racehorse, racing both on the flat and over jumps.
“She’ll go to Punchestown [jumps festival] next providing the ground is not too firm,” Weld says.
“She’s a lovely, big genuine mare.”
Unaccompanied is owned by Moyglare Stud Farm, who also owned dual Melbourne Cup runner Profound Beauty.
Weld has won two Melbourne Cups – with Vintage Crop (1993) and Media Puzzle (2002).
