Mark Newnham’s is having the time of his life in Hong Kong as his stable continues to send out a rapid fire run of winners, with his latest Sha Tin treble on Sunday catapulting Newnham clear at the top of the Hong Kong Trainers’ Championship with forty-five winners … two ahead of Casper Fownes and four ahead of Danny Shum.
Putting that achievement into further positive perspective is the fact that:
One: Sunday’s haul took Newnham past the forty-four winners total he recorded last season … that is with four months of the current season left to run … and …
Two: Sunday’s results took Newnham, who finished ninth on the trainer’s ladder last season, to a current season prize-money earned total of $ 91 886 415 … surpassing the total of HK$ 88 219 480 the stable earned in the entire previous season.
The personal bests just keep coming.
A week earlier Newnham won the Group 1 HK$26 million BMW Hong Kong Derby with Invincible Ibis in a race record time, a genuine career highlight and another step up with Newnham setting the record straight there after having had to settle for second place in the 2025 edition of the event when My Wish was denied by a short-head by Cap Ferrat.
Four days before that, Newnham had added another personal best to his training record when he saddled five winners at the meeting at Happy Valley. His previous best was four winners on the same race-day in Australia, spread over two venues.
By any standards it has been a quite spectacular second half of March for a stable tracking a very impressive trajectory.
