Five days ago, gun rider Chris Johnson equalled the record numbers of wins by a jockey in New Zealand when he scored on the aptly named Point Score at Ascot Park.
That win on Point Score took Johnson’s total to 2451 wins, matching that of David Walsh and it is highly likely that today should be the day when Johnson makes the record his own as he is booked for seven rides at the Ashburton meeting.
Johnson rides and prices at the time of writing are: Sooo Dusty (race 2 – $5.00), Roc Music (race 3 – $3.20), Baby Menaka (race 4 – $2.40), Tappy’s Lad (race 5 – $9.00), Letsbringiton (race 6- $5.50), Quintuple Twins (race 7 – $4.20), Shock Prospect (race 8 – $9.00).
The full list of the seven jockeys have ridden 2000 winners or more in New Zealand is: D Walsh, C Johnson (2451), L O’Sullivan (2355), N Harris (2167), W Skelton (2156), M Coleman (2131) and D Peake 2093.
That is quite a club and for Chris Johnson to move to the top of the tree, which he seems certain to do, if not today in the very near future, is quite an achievement indeed.
