Malaysian jockey dies after race fall

Malaysian racing is mourning the death of popular jockey CK Khaw, who died early on Monday morning, a week after suffering a severe race fall at Selangor Turf Club.

Khaw, who rode 218 winners during his career, was 32.

The jockey was riding three-year-old Team Work on August 9 when the horse laid out before abruptly laying in during the straight, throwing Khaw from the saddle.

Khaw was immediately taken to hospital following the incident and had remained in a coma before his death on Monday morning.

Earlier on the same card, Khaw had ridden a winner for expatriate English trainer Richard Lines.

Team Work broke through the running rail following the incident but regained his feet and continued galloping riderless.

Stewards subsequently ordered that Team Work must satisfactorily complete at least three 1000-metre barrier trials and undergo veterinary examinations before being permitted to race again.

Khaw’s death brings a tragic end to a career that produced 218 winners and leaves the Malaysian racing community mourning the loss of one of its popular riders.
