Drunken Sailor’s third place at Royal Ascot has trainer Luca Cumani eyeing another attack on the Melbourne Cup.
Cumani has has had two second placegetters at Flemington, Purple Moon in 2007 and Bauer the following year.
Drunken Sailor made the trip down under last year but failed to make the Cup field.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained Await The Dawn will be aimed at the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs following his success in the Hardwicke Stakes over Harris Tweed and Drunken Sailor.
Harris Tweed’s trainer William Haggis is also keen to get his charge to Australia.
“I think we’ve been beaten by an extraordinarily good horse who will go on to win multiple Group Ones,” Haggis said.
“We’ve given him a race and I’m keen to save him for the autumn.
“The Melbourne Cup looks an exciting idea, but my father owns him and he’s 80, so I’m not sure he’ll be as keen to go as me.”
Cumani was pleased with his Group Two placing.
“He’s come a long way from winning handicaps to being placed in a Group Two,” he said.
“I think the owners are keen for another trip to Australia for the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup, and he might go for the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood next.”
