Ten races have been set down for Sha Tin on Sunday for Champions Day, with the three majors looking very strong on paper.

Race 1. (14:45) Fwd Insurance Act Private Handicap (Class 4) 1800m
2 Beauty Viva (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top for me but not really a race I want to get involved in. This guy is three weeks between runs since racing over the mile here where he got off speed and kept chasing in the straight in a good effort in defeat behind Good Luck Babe. Gets the Blinkers back on, tick over trial was good and Zac sticks.
3 Oriental Smoke (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door. He ran third to Good Luck Babe in the race mentioned above. He had a suck run in transit and tried hard but just couldn’t quite get there. Better draw, kind map in his corner, he only runs well.
5 Volcanic Spark (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1800m and gets J Mac so he’s likeable. He ran four weeks back over 2000m here where he got back off the speed and did make up ground but was never really a threat. Like him back in trip and gets a gun rider in J Mac.
Race 2. (15:15) Fwd Insurance Goahead Group Handicap (Class 4) 1200m
8 Diriya (Bet Now: $SP.00) for me. Son of Territories that is on debut and has looked strong in trial work to get ready for start one. Latest trial was over 1000m here when running third, beaten a couple of lengths, but seemed to move really well I thought. Lands in a plum spot from the inside gate and gets Zac Purton aboard.
3 Top Throne (Bet Now: $SP.00) has done little wrong in two career outings and is one of the key chances. Both runs have come at this track/distance, the latest start being a win three weeks ago where he got the beaut run in transit from just off the speed and finished best. Tricky draw but commands respect.
11 Runjeet (Bet Now: $SP.00) stays at 1200m but he looks a horse with talent. He debuted four weeks back at this track/distance. He got back to near last in the run but was one of the real eye catchers in defeat behind Jumbo Treasure. If he can overcome the gate, he can win for sure.
Race 3. (15:45) Fwd Insurance Icbc Handicap (Class 4) 1400m
The gate is tricky for 1 Super Express (Bet Now: $SP.00) but he does look a horse with an an engine under the hood. He is five weeks between runs since an electric debut win at this track/distance, getting better as the race went on, winning by a space and ran time. The gate is tricky, but he gets J Mac and the two trials since have been quite good.
5 Monarch County (Bet Now: $SP.00) took a little while to break the maiden tag but now that he has, he can certainly go on with it. That win came on March 15 here over this trip, producing a strong finale from off the speed to score. Tick over trial a couple of weeks ago was strong and Moreira rides.
4 Forerunner (Bet Now: $SP.00) ran behind Super Express in the race mentioned above. He got back and was held up at times in the straight so while on face value, he was held, I thought he was far from disgraced in defeat. If he can get better luck in transit, he’s good enough to win.
Race 4. (16:15) Fwd Insurance Bocom Handicap (Class 2) 1400m
Toughest test to date for 6 Invincible Shield (Bet Now: $SP.00) but I think he can measure up. He hasn’t raced since March 23 when giving them a start and a beating to win over 1200m here, making it two on the bounce. Tick over trial was strong and I do think that 1400m will be no issue, especially with the way the map reads.
2 Divano (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a leading contender off the back of a win over this track/distance two weeks ago. He got the right run in transit before angling into clear air and he got better as the race went on to win and win well. His confidence is up, he can go on with it.
3 Healthy Happy (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a few weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance. He got back off speed and tried to get involved but was never really a factor behind Packing Hermod. Tick over trial last week was strong and despite the last start flop, his best is clearly good enough.
Race 5. (16:50) Chairmans Sprint 1200m
I don’t think 1 Ka Ying Rising (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the next coming, Black Caviar etc, like some make out. But, he is the best sprinter in the world as it stands right now and he should be winning this and I’d be locking in any price he is currently for The Everest. He has been so arrogant in recent times, winning by spaces, running time…he’s a beast and should be getting the job done once again.
2 Satono Reve (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a star sprinter from Japan and is very good in his own right. He pushed Ka Ying Rising in the Hong Kong Sprint so we know the talent is there and his last start win at Chukyo was outstanding. He’ll be spotting them a start but launch late.
3 Lucky Sweynesse…(Bet Now: $SP.00) is he a forgotten horse? Prior to Ka Ying Rising, this guy was the best sprinter Hong Kong to offer but hasn’t been seen since April last year. He’s had extensive trial work to get ready for the return and gets J Mac on. One to watch from a yard/market perspective.
Race 6. (17:25) Fwd Insurance Ccb Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
7 Fortune Supernova (Bet Now: $SP.00) for me. Jimmy Ting trains this former Kiwi, who made his Hong Kong debut over this track/distance four weeks ago and was one of the eye catchers of the meeting the way he closed his race off in defeat behind Aeris Nova. If he can use the inside gate to advantage, he’ll take beating.
9 Akashvani (Bet Now: $SP.00) has done little wrong in two career outings and has to be respected. Both runs have come at this track/distance, the latest being three weeks ago when on speed throughout and he tried hard but couldn’t quite get there when second to Sea Sapphire. Hard fit now, he appeals.
5 Super Legends (Bet Now: $SP.00) is five weeks between runs for Danny Shum since racing at this track/distance. He got too far back out of his ground but you had to like the way he finished his race off in defeat behind Invincible Shield. J Mac on, can settle closer, he’s dangerous.
Race 7. (18:00) Champions Mile 1600m
There is a hint of Cmon Aussie when it comes to tipping 1 Mr Brightside (Bet Now: $SP.00) but he is an elite miler and the map looks perfect for him. He hasn’t raced since the All Star Mile where he was game as ever in defeat when a narrow second to Tom Kitten. If Williams did push the button instead of waiting, I do think he wins. Prepped up, been set for this, lands in a plum spot…he’ll give an awesome sight.
2 Voyage Bubble (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to the mile after a strong win in the Hong Kong Cup where he got a peach from J Mac and made an absolute mess of them. He is a gun miler who has trialled super since and although drawn tricky, he has to be given serious respect.
7 Royal Patronage (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a first four contender. He got the right run in transit in the Doncaster and was there to win, kicking quite strongly, but just couldn’t quite see it through when a narrow second to Stefi Magnetica. He’ll put himself on speed and run an honest race I am sure.
Race 8. (18:40) QEll Cup 2000m
The start is key here for 2 Prognosis (Bet Now: $SP.00). If he jumps clean and can settle handy, I think he wins. But if he bombs the start, he’s in trouble. He ran second to Romantic Warrior in this race last year and I think you can easily make a case he should have won. J Mac is on…just has to jump clean and he’ll give this an almighty shake.
11 Liberty Island (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a star mare from Japan that ran second to Romantic Warrior in the Hong Kong Cup on International Day last year where she was brave in defeat but was simply no match for the globetrotting superstar. The gate is tricky but he has class.
5 El Vencedor (Bet Now: $SP.00) has simply been too good for them in NZ so it will be fascinating to see how he goes here. He’s had his issues since arriving in Hong Kong but from all reports, his past week or so has been pleasing, he’s worked well, and the fact they get Zac Purton to steer is a good lead. He’ll hold his own with his best.
Race 9. (19:20) Fwd Insurance Ncb Handicap (Class 3) 1600m
11 Magnificent Nine (Bet Now: $SP.00) is in a purple patch and despite the 1600m query, I think he’s the one to beat. He ran over 1400m here four weeks ago when off speed and kept chasing with purpose in the straight when third to Another World. Gets Craig Williams to steer and should land in a plum spot. Leading contender.
6 Star Mac (Bet Now: $SP.00) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance. He got a fair way out of his ground and while he was never a winning threat, he did make up headway and was pretty good in defeat I thought behind Sky Jewellery. That form clearly reads well for this.
4 Superb Kid (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes through the Another World race mentioned above. He got back off the speed and did make up some level of headway but was never really a winning threat. Fitter and up in trip, he’s an improver at odds.
Race 10. (19:55) Fwd Insurance Cmb Wing Lung Bank Handicap (Class 3) 1400m
10 Everyone’s Star (Bet Now: $SP.00) is worth a throw at the stumps in the get out. He is five weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he got quite keen in the run from the tricky draw and I reckon that took away his finale when down the track. Good lead that Moreira sticks from that run into this and has a gate to do no work.
5 Eighty Light Years (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a key threat. Three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance. He did work from the wide gate to land on speed and he tried hard but just couldn’t quite see it through when a narrow second to Brilliant Express. Tricky draw again but gets a big jockey upgrade.
2 Silo (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes through the Brilliant Express race mentioned above. He was first up and got too far back in the run but had to like the way he finished his race off in defeat despite not getting the clearest of paths. If he can get a drag into the race, he’ll be a threat.
