A sister to Orchestral set a new NZ filly yearling sale record on Monday.

The sister to Orchestral who set a New Zealand sale-ring record on Monday is bound for Australia after being bought by Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster.

The formidable combination went to NZ$2.4 million to secure the daughter of Savabeel and Symphonic, who was bought on behalf of an existing client of Waller’s.

It is the most amount paid for a yearling filly in New Zealand, smashing the previous mark of $1.6m set last year by the sister to Prowess, who was bought by Peter Moody.

Mulcaster conceded it was more than he thought they would have to pay but was not shocked she was popular, particularly after Orchestral returned to winning form in the Aotearoa Classic at the weekend’s Karaka Millions meeting.

“She’s a beautiful filly and the sister winning on Saturday night really helped (but) we have been lucky we’ve got a very good client that supported us,” Mulcaster said.

“We went probably a wee way past where we wanted to go, but it’s an auction.

“We got a beautiful filly, (we’ll) just give her time, take her back to Australia and see where she ends up.”

The Haunui Farm prepared filly is the third living foal from Symphonic, a daughter of O’Reilly who is a sister to the dam of Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas winner and Australian Guineas favourite Savaglee and a three-quarter-sister to the dam of Group 1 ATC Oaks winner Daffodil.

Symphonic’s first foal, a filly by Reliable Man, died after birth with Orchestral her first to race and she has set up the family with seven wins from 15 starts, including Group 1 wins in the New Zealand Derby and Vinery Stud Stakes in Sydney.

Symphonic missed to Savabeel after foaling Orchestral but has returned to him each year since and in 2022 had a colt who sold for NZ$310,000 at Karaka last year and last October gave birth to another filly by the legendary Kiwi stallion.
