A colt foal by Japanese superstar Equinox out of Australian Group 1 winner Mystic Journey has fetched an impressive 130 million yen — the equivalent of $1.34 million AUD — at the Northern Farm Mixed Foals Sale in Japan.
The striking youngster, bred and offered by Northern Farm, was purchased by noted buyer Naohiro Sakaguchi, who has been active at major international auctions including the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The colt is the third foal produced by Mystic Journey since her sale to Japan following her glittering Australian racing career.
Mystic Journey captured the hearts of racing fans in Australia when winning both the Australian Guineas and inaugural All-Star Mile, having been bought for just $11,000 as a yearling by Tasmanian owner Wayne Roser. Following her retirement, she was sold privately to Northern Farm, one of Japan’s most prestigious breeding operations.
Her first foal, a colt by Kizuna named Bicheno, is yet to make his race debut, while her second foal — a filly by Saturnalia — sold for 46.2 million yen (approximately $480,000 AUD) at last year’s mixed sale to buyer Hironobu Koyano.
The latest Equinox colt continues the global appeal of Mystic Journey’s bloodline, with his sire currently recognised as one of the best racehorses and most sought-after young stallions in the world, standing at Shadai Stallion Station.
The sale result marks another chapter in Mystic Journey’s remarkable story — from an $11,000 yearling bargain to producing seven-figure foals at one of Japan’s elite auctions, cementing her legacy on the international breeding stage.
