Long-serving Tasmanian stallion Tough Speed has died at the age of 29, with Armidale Stud announcing the loss of one of the state’s most influential sires after a gradual decline in health.
Tough Speed had called Armidale Stud home since being purchased by the late Denis and Robyn Whishaw in 2004, becoming a cornerstone of the Tasmanian breeding industry over the next two decades.
The son of Miswaki leaves behind an impressive legacy, siring 127 individual winners of 443 races, including 20 stakes performers, with his progeny earning almost $10 million in prizemoney.
Among his best performers were Take The Sit, Black ’N’ Tough, Lyell, Tiesto and Tough Chik, while accomplished stayer Banca Mo was another of his standout offspring.
Tough Speed also made a significant impact as a broodmare sire, producing 49 winners from 77 runners, including stakes performers Deroche, Alpine Flyer and Gee Gees Darl.
Armidale Stud principal David Whishaw paid tribute to the popular stallion, describing him as much more than simply a successful sire.
“Toughie was one of those horses that quietly became part of the family,” Whishaw said.
“Despite being a stallion, he was kind-natured, full of character and genuinely loved by the people who worked with him.
“Dad purchased him because he believed in him, but sadly he never got to see the full rewards of that decision. Fortunately for us, Tough Speed went on to justify that faith many times over.
“We’re certainly very proud of the job he did from the very limited opportunities he was given. He left us over 120 winners, 20 stakes performers and countless memories.
“His loss will be felt by everyone at Armidale.”
Tough Speed’s influence on Tasmanian racing and breeding will continue through his successful sons and daughters, as well as the growing impact of his descendants in broodmare ranks.
