Written By has been given a break after a winning debut at Sandown

Trainer Grahame Begg has turned his attention to the late summer and autumn features with promising two-year-old colt Written By who is having a break after a winning debut at Sandown.

Begg had the option to push on to Saturday’s $500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) in Sydney but after the colt’s Sandown win eight days ago the trainer was happy to send him for a short break.

Written By is expected to return to work just before Christmas and Begg has pencilled in the Group Three Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield on February 3 for his return.

That’s with a view to hopefully having a crack at the Group One Blue Diamond (1200m) three weeks later, while a trip to Sydney after that is also on the radar.

“He was in work in the middle of July and he had a jump-out at the end of September and he didn’t get passed (because of barrier manners),” Begg said.

“He had to go back for re-education at the breaker for nearly a month. He’s really done it on only a couple of gallops and to still be there after the spring and putting his best foot forward, he’s done a remarkable job.

“I thought it was best to turn him out because he could be a pretty nice horse going forward.”

Written By is part-owned by Begg’s father Neville who bred him from his mare Yau Chin who was trained by his son.

The colt is by Written Tycoon who Grahame Begg bought at the 2004 Magic Millions yearling sale and trained to win two races including the Todman Stakes.

Begg said a similarity between sire and son was they both won their first starts.

The 2015 Chairman’s Stakes was won subsequent Blue Diamond winner Extreme Choice who won the Inglis Nursery on debut.

“If we’ve got aspirations to think he’s good enough to go to Sydney then you want to get to Sydney on the least amount of runs as possible,” he said.

“You still want to have a bit left in the tank and maybe have a run that way of going (in Sydney) and then aim up, if you’re good enough.

“We just hope he measures up.”
