The Daniel Morton-trained Wonderfully Made delivered a dominant performance to win the WA Oaks (2200m) at Ascot, putting her rivals away in style with a commanding display in the straight.
Once asked for an effort, Wonderfully Made quickly put the race beyond doubt, surging clear to leave her rivals fighting out the minor placings well behind her.
“I was sort of confident with the amount of work we’ve been able to get into her that she would get it right … she is bred for it, she is tailor-made for it,” Morton said.
“It was an absolutely gun ride by Lucy (Fiore) today. She just took the bull by the horns. It was a ten out of ten.”
The daughter of Playing God had shown her class earlier this preparation with a dominant win in the WA 1000 Guineas (1800m) when sent out a $1.65 favourite.
However, she was beaten as a $1.50 favourite when stepping up to 2200m in the Natasha Stakes, a result Morton attributed to race circumstances.
“It was her first time out to a journey (2200m) and Pikey (William Pike) was a bit concerned that she wouldn’t settle enough, so we elected to go back that day, and the speed just came out of the race so it didn’t work for us,” Morton explained.
With that experience under her belt, Wonderfully Made relished the staying test this time around and stamped herself as a leading filly in the west.
Morton confirmed the filly is now set to progress to the WATC Derby (2400m) on April 11.
“She’s obviously not chasing fitness now, which is a luxury,” he said.
“We’ll get her back in cotton wool and look after her.”
