The Randwick track has been cleared as safe to race following a race morning inspection ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 Winx Stakes meeting.
Officials from the Australian Turf Club and Racing NSW stewards assessed the course on Friday before conducting a follow-up inspection on Saturday morning, with the all clear given at 7am. Despite the approval, the surface is expected to remain in the heavy range for the feature program.
Randwick received an additional 9.4mm of rain on Friday, although forecasts point to improved weather conditions for raceday itself.
Champion trainer Chris Waller, who has five horses engaged in the Winx Stakes, including last year’s winner Via Sistina, also inspected the track on Friday and admitted conditions could present him with “some tough decisions to make.”
With a dozen acceptors set to line up in the first Group 1 of the season, the stage is set for a true test of fitness and adaptability in testing ground.
