Darren Weir has just missed a clean sweep of the four maiden hurdle races at the Warrnambool three-day carnival.
The master trainer notched two of the three 3200m divisions of the maiden hurdle on the opening day on Tuesday while Waxing won the Decron Maiden Hurdle (3600m) on the second day.
Weir won with Fastnet Isle and Paraggi on Tuesday but Ancient King was beaten into second place by Livery.
“I brought four down here and the best one got beat,” Weir said.
Ridden by John Allen, who partnered Weir’s double on the opening day, Waxing ($2.70) scored by 2-1/2 lengths from Saddle The Stars ($7.50) with Meilucca ($51) eight lengths away third.
Weir said it was on Allen’s recommendation Waxing was aimed at the longest of the maiden hurdles.
A former Lloyd and Nick Williams-owned import, Waxing has assured himself a future over jumps.
“He’s a bit hard to catch on the flat,” Weir said.
“Maybe it might all come together after a few jumps races and then we can think about mixing some flat races with him.
“He can stick and likes the ground and if he doesn’t come back on the flat he’s shown he’s got a future over jumps.”
Waxing’s win was Weir’s fifth winner from the first 11 races of the carnival.
