John Sadler will study the weights for Asgard Massif in a couple of races before deciding where he goes

Trainer John Sadler will study the weights for Asgard Massif in a couple of races before deciding on an attempt at a third straight win at Sandown.

Asgard Massif has been nominated for Saturday’s fifth heat of the Silver Bowl Series (1400m) against his own age and heat six of the VRC/CRV Winter Championship (1600m) against older horses.

Sadler is favouring the Silver Bowl but will not make a decision until weights are published on Tuesday.

Asgard Massif, a winner of his past two starts at Sandown and Caulfield, was scheduled to run at Flemington on Saturday, but a wide draw and a big weight, prompted Sadler to scratch the gelding.

“He’ll probably run in the three-year-old but I won’t be running him if he gets 60 kilos like he did last week,” Sadler said.

“The barrier with that weight made the decision to scratch last week quite easy.”

Asgard Massif is owned by Singapore-based liver surgeon Dr Tan Kai Chah and is a son of former Singapore Triple Crown winner Jolie’s Shinju who campaigned in Melbourne during the 2009 Melbourne spring carnival.

Sadler said Asgard Massif, a brother to Blue Diamond Stakes placegetter Formality, was on the market following his win at Sandown last month but Dr Tan had so far not received a suitable offer.

“I would say he’ll have one, possibly two more starts with me and then make his way to Singapore,” Sadler said.

Sadler has entered Beehunter and Showcase The Gold for the Super VOBIS Two-Year-Old Handicap and is likely to rely on the latter.

Both were withdrawn from races at Mornington on Monday because of awkward draws and a heavy track.

Sadler said Beehunter would make his debut at Sale on Wednesday while Showcase The Gold was showing promise.

Like Assgard Massif, Showcase The Gold is owned by Dr Tan and is a son of Japanese winner Uno Sayuri.

“Dr Tan’s two-year-old is a nice horse but I pulled him out of here just because of the wet,” Sadler said.

“I had a bit of a query on whether he would handle it and hopefully Sandown on Saturday won’t be as wet.”
