Bjorn Baker’s Overpass, with Josh Parr in the saddle, successfully defended his title in the $4 million Quokka, boosting the gelding’s total winnings to an impressive $5.8 million.
The five-year-old was positioned just behind his stable companion, Malkovich, before making a decisive move on the turn. Overpass quickly took the lead and charged towards the finish line.
Oscar’s Fortune made a strong push along the rail, while Amelia’s Jewel and Bella Nipotina were hot on Overpass’s heels from the outside. Nevertheless, the Vancouver progeny held firm and clinched the win by a length.
Post-race, Baker was ecstatic, though he refrained from labeling Overpass a general “champion,” emphasising his significance to those close to him.
“In terms of pure racing, I’m not ready to call him a champion just yet; we need more Group 1 wins for that. But to us, he definitely is a champion,” Baker stated. “He’s a cornerstone for RAM Racing, a hero for Derby Racing, and a stalwart in our stable. We’re aiming to return for the Winterbottom.”
“Josh gave him a perfect ride, positioning him as the best horse in the race. I’d argue his consistency is among the best of any sprinter in Australia, and he really showed that today.”
Amelia’s Jewel, the $3.10 betting app favourite, put up a valiant effort to finish second, replicating last year’s quinella, while Ciaron Maher’s Bella Nipotina came in fourth, narrowly beaten by Oscar’s Fortune along the inside.
