Returning Bivouac filly Exit made an immediate impact in her second preparation, landing a narrow but impressive maiden victory at Sandown on Wednesday.

Trained by Ciaron Maher and owned by Ozzie Khier, the two-year-old had finished ninth on debut in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies but returned in excellent order following a strong jumpout. Backed into a $2.70 favourite, she lived up to expectations.

Exit was second-last on the turn and was forced to make a sweeping run down the outside. She reeled in leader Expulsion ($8.50) at the furlong mark and pulled clear to score by more than a length, with Lope De Lardo ($3) another three lengths away in third.

Purchased for $675,000, Exit is out of well-bred Lonhro mare Secretly Discreet, and there are high hopes she will develop into a stakes-class filly, with jockey Blake Shinn flagging the Thousand Guineas as a potential spring target.

“Gorgeous filly. Good physically and a good brain,” Shinn said.

“She was quite an expensive yearling and she’s got a good pedigree, but that doesn’t always account for everything.

“Although there’s a ninth on her form guide, I thought the run had a lot of merit. Bit of time between preparations, she’d trialled up nice.

“The big straight here helped her, she got to the front, idled down and won with a bit in hand, so there’s plenty of upside.

“I think she’s got scope to get out to a mile, I think her pedigree suggests that. She could be on a Thousand Guineas type of path.”

The win also boosted Shinn’s position in the Victorian metropolitan jockeys’ premiership, extending his lead over Craig Williams to six (69 to 63).
