Chris Waller already has the favourite for this year’s Cox Plate in defending champion Via Sistina, but he believes she may not be his only contender for the famous Moonee Valley feature.
Joining Waller’s stable in the coming weeks is high-profile import Trinity College, a former Coolmore three-year-old from Ireland who will begin his Australian career as a four-year-old after being purchased by Yulong in a significant deal.
The colt arrives with an imposing record across 10 starts for Aidan O’Brien, and while Waller is optimistic about his future, he is cautious about setting lofty expectations too early.
“Obviously, he’s good enough to win a Cox Plate,” Waller said. “He’s probably good enough to win a Caulfield Cup and it’s just a matter of whether it’s this year or next, I’d suggest.
“What I’ve learned about these imported horses, if they have the ability, wait for them to show it rather than making them show it. So, it’s all about how he adapts.”
Trinity College’s European highlights include a commanding 3.5-length victory in the G3 Hampton Court Stakes (2000m) at Royal Ascot, before narrowly being denied as favourite in the G1 Prix de Paris (2400m) at Longchamp.
In early markets, Trinity College has been posted at $17 for the Caulfield Cup and $26 for the Cox Plate.
