The Victorian Government has confirmed a $5 million investment into the redevelopment of Moonee Valley racecourse, targeting upgrades to the racetrack, lighting, and tie-up stalls as part of a broader infrastructure transformation.
Funded under the Victorian Racing Industry Fund, the contribution will be joined by a $16 million outlay from the Moonee Valley Racing Club, forming part of a $220 million revamp set to reshape the historic venue over the next two years.
“We’re investing in the infrastructure that will cement the Valley’s future and our reputation as the racing capital of Australia β supporting trainers, jockeys, owners and fans,β said Racing Minister Anthony Carbines.
“We will always back the racing industry which does so much for our state β generating $4.7 billion for the economy and supporting 35,000 full-time equivalent jobs.”
Moonee Valley Racing Club Chair Adam Lennen welcomed the funding, saying it was key to delivering the club’s ambitious plans.
“The Victorian Government’s support is a vital contribution to our bold vision for the future of The Valley β this funding helps us realise our vision of transforming The Valley into the premier night racing destination in the world,β Lennen said.
The racetrack is set to close following the 2025 Cox Plate meeting, with the redevelopment aiming to be complete in time for the 2027 edition of the famed race.
The overhaul will include a new 27-metre-wide track, improved drainage and irrigation, and a grandstand repositioned to run from Feehan Avenue to Victoria Street, shifting the trackβs orientation by 90 degrees.
Additional works will deliver upgraded facilities such as horse stalls, a veterinary office, farrier room, parade ring, swab and scope boxes, as well as a new patron entrance and energy-efficient lighting.
The racetrack upgrade will take place alongside the Moonee Valley Park residential development, which will provide over 2000 new homes.
