Bel Sonic has booked a ticket to the Gold Coast after recording a last-to-first victory at Moonee Valley.
The Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) on January 13 is on the agenda for the gelding following his win in Saturday’s VOBIS Gold Carat.
Ridden by Ben Melham, Belsonic was backed from $6 into $4.40 before scoring by a long head from Aeecee Tong De ($5.50) with Teleplay ($9) a half neck away third.
Trainer Jason Warren plans to enjoy Christmas and then head to the Gold Coast with Bel Sonic.
“I’d rather get him up there sooner rather than later,” Warren said.
“He’s needs to go up early because it’s so hot up there and he needs to get used to it.
“We’ll get over Christmas first but I would say he’ll go up in the next week.”
Warren entered Saturday’s meeting confident Bel Sonic would back up his first-up Pakenham win but as the meeting progressed admitted to feeling nervous.
He had witnessed early races being dominated by horses racing on the speed and leading into the straight.
“I said to Benny to trust the horse has got the turn of foot we think he’s got,” Warren said.
“From barrier 11 we had to ride him quietly and trust he was good enough.
“I think it’s a pretty good race and will be a pretty good form race going forward.
Melham is confident the 1400m at the Gold Coast will suit the gelding as he’s so relaxed in his races.
Concerning for Melham though is Bel Sonic’s habit of rolling in as he unleashes his final sprint.
He did that on Saturday early in the straight after circling the field.
“They went quite solid early but they pulled-up through the middle stages,” Melham said.
“I was going to ride through them but I decided to come around them and as soon as I got to the outside he picked up strongly.
“He’s better than average but he still does a bit wrong, however he’s improving all the time.”
