Troubled former star jockey Jason Maskiell has taken a large step towards a return to race riding with permission to ride in barrier trials.
Maskiell was a frequent winner in Melbourne but the fast rise to the top took its toll and his race riding career hit turmoil after receiving a six month ban for testing positive to drugs in 2011.
Maskiell returned to riding but again failed a drug test at Kyneton on Melbourne Cup day in 2013 which resulted in a 18-month ban which saw him fall off the scene whilst battling a drug addiction.
Jason plans to turn things around including returning to race riding in the new season and this morning that plan took one step closer to becoming reality with permission to ride in barrier trials.
