Hong Kong’s champion miler Able Friend could be a star attraction at The Championships during the Sydney autumn carnival.
His owner Do Cornel Li Fook-kwan is considering an invitation to run him in the $3 million Doncaster Mile at Randwick.
The winner of the Hong Kong Mile last month, Able Friend began his career with two starts for the Hawkes team in Sydney, running an unlucky second on debut before winning at Wyong.
He is now trained by John Moore in Hong Kong where he has won seven races, five over 1600 metres.
His owner and trainer also have the Dubai Duty Free in March as an option.
“John hasn’t even started to really work on me yet for Dubai, but I’m not that keen on it and I’ve had an invitation for the Doncaster, which might be interesting,” Dr Li told the South China Morning Post.
Li said he was not concerned about the weight Able Friend would get in the feature handicap.
“If he has a big handicap, it wouldn’t worry him,” he said.
“He’s such a big strong horse now, he’d carry the weight.”
Quarantine restrictions also come into play because a trip to Australia would rule Able Friend out of the Champions Mile at Sha Tin in early May.
Able Friend’s next assignment is the Stewards Cup later this month.
