Tasmanian apprentice Jabez Johnstone is closing in on a permanent move to Victoria after making an outstanding impression during his three-month loan with the Ciaron Maher stable.
The 20-year-old has quickly established himself in metropolitan racing since arriving in Melbourne and recently celebrated the milestone of 100 career winners.
Johnstone has ridden multiple city winners during his stint in Victoria, including victories at both Sandown and Flemington, after transferring from his apprenticeship with Tasmanian trainer Sarah Cotton.
The opportunity came after Tasmania won the 2026 National Apprentice Race Series, with Johnstone earning the interstate placement by riding the required number of winners.
Introduced to racing by his sister Taylor, Johnstone began his apprenticeship in Tasmania before taking the next step in his career with one of Australia’s premier training operations.
Now firmly established among Victoria’s busiest claiming jockeys, Johnstone is aiming to secure his long-term future in Melbourne as he prepares for the opportunities presented by the upcoming spring carnival.
