Race day experience has paved the way for Lloyd’s Crown winning the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap at Sandown.
Mornington trainer Rebecca Waymouth says there is nothing to be alarmed about with Lloyd’s Crown swishing his tail at the business end of his races.
Usually that is the sign a horse is resenting being struck with the whip, but that is not the case with Lloyd’s Crown, winner of the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (1000m) at Sandown on Wednesday.
“It’s nothing to do with the whip, it’s actually a family trait,” Waymouth said.
“We’ve bred from the family before and I don’t know why they do it.
“He does it home just trotting and cantering around, he’s a bit of a weirdo.”
Under the urgings of Remi Tremsal, Lloyd’s Crown ($7) held-off Along The River ($12) to record a short-neck victory with Rambeau ($4.60) two lengths off third.
Lloyd’s Crown, a son of Rebel Dane from the High Rolling mare Mahogany Room, was having his second start on Wednesday having finished second to Rambeau as a $41 chance at Pakenham on May 12.
“We were quite confident that he would run a good race at his first start and I was quite happy to get $8 a place,” Waymouth said.
“He’s a very unassuming sort of horse and everytime we’ve asked him to do something he’s just improved.
“(Brother) Rowan galloped him on Thursday and was really happy with his work.
“It’s very hard with two-year-old races as everyone has a spruik on their horses, but I was really happy with the improvement he had made.
“Today he was a lot better in the barriers, jumped a lot cleaner.”
For Tremsal, who also runs a successful confectionary business named Caramelicious, there was a double reason to celebrated a rare city victory.
“It’s my wife’s (Breena) birthday today, so I can now afford a nice bottle of wine,” Tremsal said.
