Tabcorp the owner of TAB betting shops throughout NSW have been cutting off privately owned/run pubs who decide to display Ladbrokes or Neds signage as part of the deal between Entain and the NSW Australian Hotels Association.
The Commercial in Bega has been a popular spot for punters to gather, watch thoroughbred and greyhound racing, and place bets through an agreement with Tabcorp and its flagship racing channel, Sky.
However, a significant shift occurred last year when Mr. Creary struck a deal with Entain (owner of Ladbrokes and Neds) to introduce a Ladbrokes-themed area within his establishment. This move was intended to help alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with running the TAB and covering broadcast fees for Sky. Unfortunately, the decision led to unexpected consequences and plunged Mr. Creary into a bitter dispute between two of the nation’s largest bookmakers, ultimately resulting in a decline in patronage at his pub.
Upon entering into the partnership with Entain, Mr. Creary found himself at odds with Tabcorp, which swiftly terminated its longstanding agreement with his pub. Consequently, the TAB facilities were removed, and the Sky Channel broadcast was disconnected, much to the disappointment of loyal patrons who had come to rely on these amenities.
The situation has left Mr. Creary frustrated and disheartened, particularly as his pub is one of approximately 40 venues in NSW displaying Ladbrokes or Neds signage as part of the deal between Entain and the NSW Australian Hotels Association. Despite signing the agreement with Entain in May, Tabcorp, which holds the exclusive retail wagering license in NSW until 2033, took swift action to sever ties with The Commercial in Bega.
Reflecting on the impact of these developments, Mr. Creary emphasised the financial strain imposed on his small country pub. For 17 years, providing access to Sky Channel and TAB services had been a complimentary service for his customers, even if it operated at a loss for the establishment. However, the recent changes have significantly altered the landscape, driving away patrons and highlighting the complex dynamics within the wagering industry.
