Nikki the daughter of Subzero’s best mate (Graham) has been amazed and thankful of the support from Subzero’s fans over the past week taking to facebook to express their gratitude.
Nikki Salisbury has given the latest update/story on Subzero but says she will leave the medical updates to the vet.
“Today we went in to visit our beautiful beautiful soldier. Dad and Mum walked down the breezeway of the barn pushing me in my chair. Just before we got to his stable, through the bars we see this bright eyed fluffy face with little fluffy ears pricked as high as they could go. We got to his stable and he was so excited to see us.”
“The girls were just finishing up draining the crap from his belly (the Peritonitis) and he was howling into fresh green grass that one of the main vets (who is extremely busy) went across the road to the racetrack to cut with scissors (because Subbie HATES the roots and cracks it when he gets to the dirty bit 🙄) he has everyone at the clinic wrapped around his little hoof. Typical.”
“We spent a bit over 2 hours with him. Dad sat with him for a while, until his back started hurting then I moved up (wheelchairs on beautiful dense shavings don’t work too well) I hit a bit of a dip in the shavings and I couldn’t go forward any further and I was still a little out of reach from him. So before I could do anything Subbie looked at me and stepped across. I sat with his head on my lap (nothing new really, he does this at home) for a while and then he ate a bucket of hard feed on my lap, dropping it all over me. He stood munching with his head on my lap while I gave him scratches and cuddles for ages. Our vet (Sarah) was shocked at the difference in him between the morning and when we got there with him.”
“Then he got an itchy nose and remembered that my nice “scratchy” fiberglass cast is a good scratching post and now I have horse feed stuck in my cast just at the toes but beyond reach.”
“Whilst we were there two people/families in the space of 5 minutes stopped in at the Vets office just to wish Subbie well wishes (made my heart melt) and one had made a beautiful card that is now proudly hung on Subbie’s stable door. We did not get these people’s names but if you were either of these people/families, please send me a message if you can as I would sincerely love to thank you personally from my parents, myself and Subbie. Even Sarah our amazing vet was blown away by this incredible gesture of these families.”

This is not the first time the Melbourne Cup winner has been on deaths the horse required urgent medication from the US in the early 2000’s to stay alive he again almost lost his life three years later with a bowel obstruction.
