Bendigo trainer Shane Fliedner has high hopes for Flemington winner St Edward's Crown

Bendigo trainer Shane Fliedner has high hopes for Flemington winner St Edward’s Crown.

St Edward’s Crown broke through for her maiden win on Saturday in the Bruce Gadsden Handicap.

Ridden by Damien Thornton, St Edward’s Crown ($8.50) scored by a short neck from Lesage ($4.40) with $2 favourite Witchfulthinking a long-head away.

St Edward’s Crown is a half-sister to Godolphin sprinter Viridine and is owned by her breeder Mario Cesnik.

“I haven’t had many good horses, but she’s one of the best ones I’ve had,” Fliedner said.

“She’s been nothing but a little gem to train.

“Her owner, and breeder, and I have become very good friends.

“I’ve cut my team down over the past few months, half the team’s his and the other half is mine.”

Fliedner said the filly was possibly better suited to 1400m but after finishing second at 1200m at her last start on May 25 was happy to come back in distance on Saturday.

“The tempo last time was too slow,” Fliedner said.

“We thought it would be quicker today and I said to Damien I hadn’t over-trained her and she would have a good turn of foot.

“I’ll make a decision on whether to give her another run, possibly over 1400 metres here in a fortnight, but if not I’ll put her away and try for some black type early in the spring.”
