New Zealand filly Solid Gold is on track to back up in Saturday’s Group 1 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm after emerging from her Queensland Derby run as one of the leading chances for the fillies’ feature.
The daughter of Turn Me Loose produced a creditable performance when finishing fifth against the colts and geldings in last weekend’s Queensland Derby, overcoming a difficult run after conceding a significant start.
A capacity field of 18 runners plus five emergencies was declared on Tuesday, with Solid Gold receiving a favourable draw in barrier four after jumping from gate 14 in the Derby.
Group 1 Australasian Oaks winner Panova shapes as one of the major dangers after drawing barrier six for trainer Chris Waller.
The talented filly will carry the No. 1 saddlecloth and heads the market following her elite-level victory in Adelaide.
Waller will also be represented by Chispa and Single Red, although both face challenging tasks after drawing barriers 20 and 21 respectively.
With regular rider James McDonald sidelined through suspension, Ben Melham has been booked to partner Panova in the Oaks.
The race promises to be one of the highlights of the Queensland Winter Carnival, with a strong mix of local and interstate contenders chasing Group 1 success.
