South Australian jockey David Tootell finds himself in a critical condition after a harrowing race fall at Port Augusta on Sunday. Tootell, a seasoned 61-year-old rider, was thrown off his mount Hardashian during race 3 when the horse stumbled shortly after the start.
In a heartfelt social media post on Sunday night, Tootell’s close friend and trainer Shayne Cahill provided an update on the jockey’s condition. He revealed, “Currently David is in the Port Augusta hospital and has been put to sleep, induced coma due to two small brain bleeds on his brain he will have scans during this time.” Cahill further added that Tootell would not be awakened until he is transferred to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Reflecting on the inherent dangers of their profession, Cahill stated, “Another reminder today of how dangerous this job is.”
The incident also affected Tootell’s daughter, Caitlin, who is an apprentice jockey and was participating in the same meeting. Following her father’s fall, Caitlin was stood down from her remaining rides for the day, undoubtedly shaken by the events.
