Trainer Richard Cully is eyeing a Melbourne Cup campaign for Excelleration after the stayer’s gripping victory in Monday’s Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m).
The seven-year-old gelding, ridden by Harry Coffey, triumphed in a thrilling final 200m duel against The Map, igniting dreams of the iconic two-mile handicap.
Excelleration, purchased for $6000 at the 2018 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, has impressed Cully since his debut win in late 2020.
Despite setbacks, Cully remains confident in Excelleration’s staying ability, considering a tilt at the Andrew Ramsden Stakes for a Melbourne Cup ballot exemption.
Reflecting on the win, Cully, a former jumps jockey turned trainer, admitted to watching the race from home, preferring the distance from the trackside buzz.
With his sights set on Flemington, Cully anticipates a promising future for his resilient stayer.
