Racing NSW has announced a significant increase to the minimum prizemoney levels for Metropolitan and Provincial horse racing, which is set to benefit the sport by more than $6.5 million annually.
This latest boost is a major development, particularly for Metropolitan and Provincial sectors which have seen the lowest proportional increases in prizemoney since 2004.
The updated prizemoney amounts, scheduled to take effect from 1 August 2023, include an increase to $160,000 for Metropolitan Saturday minimum prizemoney, a rise from the current $150,000.
Further, the minimum prizemoney for Metropolitan public holiday and midweek races will also see an increase.
Meanwhile, the prizemoney for Provincial races will increase to $42,000 per race from the existing $40,000.
Racing NSW Chairman, Mr Russell Balding AO, commented on the importance of ensuring Metropolitan racing remains robust for the sake of the industry. He stated,
“Itβs imperative that Metropolitan racing is strong and that benefits generated from these meetings flow on to all sectors of the industry. Minimum prizemoney increases underpin Metropolitan racing and NSWβs place as a world class racing location.” Balding said.
“$150,000 races headlining public holiday fixtures will also invigorate these race meetings.”
However, despite the promising increase in prizemoney, some punters have voiced their concerns.
They fear that this surge in prizemoney may create a more competitive atmosphere, potentially driving smaller or struggling trainers out of the sport.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the distribution of the prizemoney, with critics arguing that a focus on supporting grassroots racing and breeding would be more beneficial than prioritising the upper echelons of the sport.
