Promising filly Polymnia is set to continue her rise through the ranks with a shot at Group 1 glory in the upcoming Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on April 26.
Trained by the partnership of John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, the three-year-old caught the eye with a strong performance in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick earlier this month, finishing a close second behind Belle Detelle.
“It was a good run at Randwick,” said co-trainer Tom Charlton to Racing.com. “It couldn’t be faulted.”
Polymnia had broken her maiden just one start earlier with a win over 1800m at Hawkesbury, and the stable believes she’s ready for the step up in class and distance. With that in mind, they’ve elected to skip the ATC Australian Oaks in favour of the 2000-metre feature in Adelaide.
“Three-year-old fillies staying races—she should be effective in those races in Adelaide,” Charlton added, indicating confidence in her ability to see out the trip.
Jamie Melham has been booked for the ride, bringing solid Group race experience to the partnership.
While some of her Adrian Knox rivals pressed on to the longer ATC Oaks, the O’Shea-Charlton team feels the Australasian Oaks presents the better opportunity at this point in Polymnia’s career.
