All the indications were there so people just followed the money.
HUNNAM (Shalaa-Skating On Ice) an unraced 2YO in the Team Hawkes yard, opened on Thursday night at $15.
But money came for him, a lot of it, and by Saturday morning he was into $7.40.
By race time, he jumped, with pretty much every person in the land having something on him at $3.70.
The plonk was huge.
The run was not.
In the $1million Golden Gift he was always well back and just did not fire a shot when pulled to the outside for a charge in the straight.
He wound up last, the punters’ money turned to confetti and the stable left scratching their heads.
The fillies fought it out. SNEAKY FIVE (Fastnet Rock-Small Minds) was just too dour in the run to the line and kept her unbeaten record going by clinging on to beat fellow filly CERDA (Snitzel-Comprende) by a long neck with the early leader…yep, another filly in MURA MURA (Not A Single Doubt-Mount Zero) hanging tough for 3rd.
The 2nd and 3rd runners are maidens but won’t be for much longer. The favourite Captivant was 4th with the big red light flashing of the debutante Head Of State in 5th. Mark him down as a horse to follow.
Ciaron Maher & David Eustace train the winner and she now has won $855,000 in just two starts!
