Former racing administrator Martin Talty has been appointed the new chief executive of the Australian Jockeys Association replacing Paul Innes who is retiring.

Talty began his career as a racing journalist in Sydney and later held positions as Dubai Racing Club International racing manager and Victoria Racing Club executive general manager of racing.

AJA chairman Des O’Keeffe said Talty brought an outstanding level of experience to the position which he will formally begin at the end of the month.

“Martin Talty’s application stood out amongst the eighty received. The board was unanimous that a stellar thirty-year career in world racing, including executive roles with the Emirates Racing Authority, the Dubai Racing Club, and most recently with the Victoria Racing Club, identified Martin as the perfect fit for this important role,” O’Keeffe said.

“The bonus for us is Martin also brings high level experience and skill in media, communication, negotiation and administration.

“The AJA’s charter is to address matters of national importance for Australia’s jockeys. The AJA presents a united voice for Australia’s jockeys in areas of safety, welfare, working conditions and remuneration.”

Talty said he was excited to take up the role and committed to making a positive contribution to the Australian riding group.

“Since its beginning in 2001 the AJA has become a significant stakeholder in the Australian racing industry and I look forward to carrying on the good work that has been done to have brought it to that level,” Talty said.

“There are issues within the industry that are forthcoming that will have a direct impact on Australia’s jockeys but with the co-operation of Racing Australia and each state’s regulatory bodies I am confident that successful outcomes can be achieved to the benefit of all within the industry.”
