A 51-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a series of fires, including a devastating blaze that caused significant damage to the Norman Robinson stand at Caulfield Racecourse.
The arrest occurred at Mordialloc train station on Tuesday afternoon following reports of multiple grass fires in the vicinity, which police are also investigating for potential connections to the racecourse fire.
Early Tuesday morning, scores of firefighters were dispatched to the scene on Station Street, where they battled the grandstand fire, managing to bring it under control by 7:09 AM.
Thankfully, paramedics confirmed that no injuries occurred, and the area was safely evacuated.
The track has been declared a crime scene and is under thorough investigation by Victoria Police, who have deemed the fires suspicious.
This development follows previous reports of an individual captured on CCTV setting the racecourse fire, prompting a significant response from both fire services and law enforcement to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.
