Larry Cassidy retires after illustrious 39-year riding career

Champion jockey Larry Cassidy has officially announced his retirement after 39 years in the saddle, citing ongoing health challenges from a debilitating finger injury.

The injury, sustained during trackwork at Eagle Farm, nearly led to amputation but was saved after multiple surgeries.

Cassidy had also been battling pain from a ruptured disc in his back before the finger issue.

“After more than a year, two surgeries, and numerous, painful physio sessions, I have made the difficult decision to retire,” Cassidy announced on facebook.

“I want to thank everyone that has helped and supported me throughout my 39 years of riding.”

Cassidy’s remarkable career includes 40 Group 1 wins and a pivotal role in Winx’s legendary 33-race winning streak, starting with the 2015 Sunshine Coast Guineas.

Though retiring as a jockey, Cassidy is eager to stay involved in the racing industry, possibly as a steward.

“I have been lucky enough to have had a wonderful career and I am now excited to start the next chapter,” he said.
