Bunbury trainer Michael Lane has high regard for The Boss Lady and is keen to see if the richly talented mare can progress towards bigger goals in the short and long term.
If The Boss Ladyย lives up to Michael Lane’s lofty estimation, she could make her presence felt in the next couple of weeks and later in the year come Ascot carnival time.
The Boss Lady moved a step closer to Lane’s first goal after stretching out her legs in a soft Bunbury hit out on Monday, finishing second in a four-horse trial.
A home bred for Lane; it was The Boss Lady’s first official public outing since showing encouraging signs in last year’s breakout campaign at Ascot.
Lane won’t give The Boss Lady a taxing time, but going after rich prize money and upping the ante in feature races against quality sprinters is on the radar
It’s been part of Lane’s thinking for a couple of months and confirmed after the daughter of Street Boss won a string of races during Ascot’s 2024 Pinnacles carnival.
The Boss Lady scored a winning hat trick but came under notice in the middle leg after clinching maiden black type status in the Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m).
“We’ll go to the Roma Cup first and the that leads to The Joey or The Quokka,” Lane said.
“They are both on the same day obviously.
“We’ll be guided on how she goes first up in the Roma to see if we can get a slot or if she’s good enough to go in the Quokka, I suppose.
“It’s a big step up, but we have good faith in her and either or, that’s our plan, the two starts, the Roma Cup into the Quokka Day.
“I’m under no illusion that she needs to step up going into a Quokka, but the Joey is there if we don’t think she’s up to the class.
“We won’t be disappointed in having a Joey horse, I can tell you.”
It was an easy time for The Boss Lady in her 900m Bunbury trial.
Under quiet riding from Chris Parnham, she hit the line under her own steam without being fully tested.
Lane came away happy with the hit out.
“I was really happy with the way she went today,” Lane said.
“It was a nice, soft trial.
“She’s come up nice and I’m happy with where she’s at.
“She’s put on good muscle and built up nice, her weight is good.
“Obviously she had a little blow, we knew she would.
“That’s why we’ll go to Belmont trials next Monday for another hit out.”
The Roma Cup, run at Group 3 level over 1100m, is staged at Ascot on April 12.
The $5 million Quokka (1200m) and $200,000 Joey (1200m) follow a fortnight later.
