Kinky Boom has leapt to the second line of Blue Diamond betting following an impressive debut win at Caulfield.
The Tony McEvoy-trained two-year-old was promoted to $8 second favourite behind Long Leaf ($7) after her win in Saturday’s Inglis Premier (1200m).
Kinky Boom, an easing $3.70 equal favourite, went from last to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Grand Symphony ($41), with Aristocratic Miss ($4.60) a half-length away third.
Kinky Boom went into Saturday’s race following an eight-length barrier trial win at Morphettville last Monday.
McEvoy said he wasn’t impressed with the way he’d handled the filly’s preparation.
He explained Kinky Boom was due to trial at Gawler on January 22 but refused to load into the barriers.
“That panicked us a bit and my son Calvin and John Cornell got to work on her getting her in the gates with an intensive little program,” McEvoy said.
“We got her to the Morphettville trials on Monday and she did what she did and that left us no choice but to come over and she proved up to the task.”
The first prize of $137,500 gets Kinky Boom into the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on February 24.
“That money gets us to the big dance,” McEvoy said.
“Three weeks out it’s too hard to pass up when you have a filly of this ability.”
Jockey Craig Williams, who won last year’s Blue Diamond aboard the Lindsay Park-trained Catchy, said Kinky Boom reminded him of other fillies he rode in the lead-up to last year’s race.
“It’s still three weeks away but she’s got the makings of being a huge contender in the Blue Diamond,” Williams said.
“Last year I had the choice of five rides in the Blue Diamond but that (Kinky Boom) was quite special today.”
