An incident in the final race has marred Golden Slipper day at Rosehill with Kerrin Mcevoy suffering a heavy fall when his mount, Tintookie, broke down rounding the home turn in the Birthday Card Stakes.
McEvoy remained conscious and was treated by paramedics on the track before being transported to Westmead Hospital for x-rays.
“He’s got a full range of movement, but he’s got discomfort in the lower back and hip,” Racing NSW chief steward Steve Railton said.
“He has been taken to Westmead for assessment.”
Railton confirmed that unfortunately Tintookie’s injuries meant she was unable to be saved.
McEvoy’s fall came at the end of what had been a mixed day for the popular jockey.
After going within a head of winning the Golden Slipper when Coleman was narrowly denied by Lady of Camelot, he bounced back to claim the Group 1 The Galaxy aboard outsider Zapateo.
McEvoy took that as a chance to issue a ‘shout out’ to his son Charlie, who had broken his wrist playing football on Saturday morning.
The Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) was won by the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Chain Of Lightning ($16), who beat Tashi by three-quarters of a length with Wee Nessy third.
