Trainer Ken Keys has nominated his promising three-year-old colt, Scheelite, for the Cox Plate.
While Scheelite’s main target is the Caulfield Guineas, Keys believes the Cox Plate should also be on the agenda.
“With the Cox Plate he’s already in but you don’t have a choice with a horse like him,” Keys told Racing.com.
Scheelite recently finished fifth in the Group 3 Vain Stakes at Caulfield and won his first two starts.
Keys was also pleased with the colt’s recent trial at Cranbourne, stating, “We thought he trialled well the other day. He seems to have grown a bit.”
Keys compares Scheelite to Soul Patch, another horse he trained that won the 2020 AAMI Vase and finished third in the Victoria Derby.
“Soul Patch was the best horse I’ve trained,” Keys said.
Scheelite is currently listed at $17 odds for the Caulfield Guineas on Ladbrokes.
