Kelsey Hannan, who suffered a fall at Strathalbyn on Sunday, has been brought out of an induced coma in which she was placed after drifting in and out of consciousness after the fall.
The New Zealand born, now South Australian based apprentice, was air-lifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital amid serious concerns after the fall.
While she has suffered a stable fracture of her C1 vertebrae, thankfully scans have confirmed that she has not suffered any spinal cord damage at all and she is expected to make a full recovery.
A statement released by Racing South Australia reads:
‘Racing SA is pleased to advise that apprentice jockey Kelsey Hannan has been cleared of any serious injury following her fall at Strathalbyn yesterday.
‘She has been diagnosed with a stable fracture in her C1 vertebrae and has not suffered any spinal cord damage. We anticipate that she will be released from hospital within the next 24 hours.
‘On behalf of her family and the entire riding group, our thanks go to the team at the Royal Adelaide Hospital for their outstanding care of Kelsey and to the wider racing community for their messages of love and support.’
The Strathalbyn meeting, which was called off after the incident, has been rescheduled for Friday.
