ANZAC Day – very emotive on many levels for every Aussie and Kiwi.
And it isn’t lost on sport in this country either. We know that.
Everyone will stand and hear the last post, at pretty much every game played, and at each racetrack, and will feel a sense of joy knowing the Diggers stood side by side and fought their way against all odds so that we might live in peace and paradise.
But what it does to the modern sports person is unique.
And jockey Mitchell Bell just took it to a new level.
He will ride at Gosford today and has five rides – two of them are very big chances of winning.
And I hope you cheer them home for him, because he just decided he would donate ALL of his riding fees to Legacy today. Legacy help families of vets.
Those five rides come to around $660 – and he’s doing it just because he’s an Aussie moved by today, moved even further by the sheer force of patriotism, and driven by the gratitude that comes from being here, doing what he loves because those vets fought for us all those years ago.
His generosity, once found out, was responsible for spurring on Damian Flower, who bought and raced Snitzel and Rubick and who races all his horses under the banner Jadeskye, to action as well.
“I only have one runner in today, Akari in race 2 at Randwick. I’ll donate the prizemoney to Legacy.”
