Jigsaw unstoppable with seventh straight win in The Quokka

Speedster Jigsaw extended his remarkable winning streak to seven with another front-running display in the $5 million The Quokka in Perth.

Partnered by Logan Bates, Jigsaw adopted his customary aggressive tactics, rolling to the lead early and proving too strong once again, holding off all challengers to continue his outstanding run of form.

Trainer Cindy Alderson and jockey Bates were both left struggling to sum up the performance after the race.

Jigsaw was pressured early by Newmarket Handicap winner Caballus and Country Discovery victor Spywire, but he quickly asserted his dominance and had them beaten soon after straightening.

The main threat emerged late from fellow Cranbourne-trained sprinter Rey Magnerio, prepared by Robbie Griffiths, who charged home to finish second.

The winning sequence began at Cranbourne on October 10 last year, when Jigsaw secured victory at his 34th start with Bates aboard.

Since then, he has added wins in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley, the Meteorite at Cranbourne, the Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ellerslie, the VOBIS Gold Sprint, the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley and now The Quokka.

Alderson admitted the occasion got the better of her in the closing stages.

“I’m lost for words. They just fail me; seven in a row, seven years old, some sort of symmetry,” Alderson said on Sky Thoroughbred Channel.

She also reflected on her close friendship with the late form analyst Deane Lester following the victory.

Alderson highlighted the role of co-owner Marcus Price, who joined the ownership group after an offer from Hong Kong was declined.

“This is the ride of a lifetime. How could you go any better than this,” Alderson said.

She also acknowledged the effort of Griffiths and his team with runner-up Rey Magnerio, praising their preparation.

Bates was equally full of praise for his mount and trainer.

He credited Alderson for her work with the gelding, describing her efforts as outstanding.

Bates also noted Jigsaw’s toughness late in the race after a long preparation.

“He was all out at the 100m mark. He just kept surging. What a horse,” Bates said.
