Randwick litmus test for Annabel Neasham-trained duo

Two former Kiwis will make their Sydney debuts for Annabel Neasham at Randwick and their new trainer is optimistic both can pay their way.

Lightning Jack is an acceptor for the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) but after drawing barrier 18, he is likely to instead take his place in Saturday’s Catanach’s Handicap over the same journey.

A proven stakes performer across the Tasman, the five-year-old has won six of his 20 starts and Neasham is keen to get a better gauge on where he fits in Sydney.

“I have literally only had him for about ten days, so I am still getting to know him,” Neasham told Sky Sports radio.

“He’s not a very big horse but he is a really well put together horse.

“We have galloped him twice and his work has been solid, so I’m really excited about him.”

Lightning Jack will carry 58kg after the claim of apprentice Tyler Schiller and will clash with stablemate Equation, who looks to be nearing a win following his fast-finishing second to Villiers hopeful Steely at Kembla Grange last start.

Another recent stable addition, Fleetwood Maca, has also been sent to Sydney to chase the good prizemoney on offer.

The mare has not raced since April, but she did finish runner-up to New Zealand Oaks winner Amarelinha at Group 2 level 12 months ago.

She has had two trials to prepare for her return, although Neasham expects her to improve on whatever she shows on Saturday.

“She is a nice filly. She can be a bit hot and complicated, but she is settling down,” Neasham said.

“I think she will need this run. She has been off the scene for a while, and she had a good blow after that trial the other day, but I think this is a nice race to kick her off in.”
