Most European imports take a preparation to adjust to Australian racing, but Huetor has been an instant hit.
The former French galloper is unbeaten in two local appearances and has been impressive both times, producing a turn of foot to win over a mile at Newcastle then coming from a long way off the pace to run down Welsh Legend at Rosehill last start.
His form has been a pleasant surprise to co-trainer Peter Snowden, who admitted he initially thought the gelding would be a slow burn.
“Looking at him, he was a bit of a one-paced plugger over there and I thought he might need a prep to get his eye in here,” Snowden said.
“I had that mindset when he came in, but he just kept putting his hand up and doing better in the yard. He kept working better and his work got sharper and that’s why we went to the races with him.
“The fact he has done what he’s done tells us he might be a bit above average.”
Huetor is rated a $4.20 chance to extend his winning sequence to three in the Precise Air Handicap (2000m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Kerrin Mcevoy retains the mount and Snowden has flagged it as the horse’s final start of the campaign with a view to bringing him back for better races.
“Knowing how these horses improve next time through, my thought is to run him Saturday then give him a bit of a break,” Snowden said.
“These carnivals come around really quickly and to get him to the autumn carnival and possibly to Brisbane, he needs to have a bit of a break now.
“We’ve got to get through Saturday first but I’m happy with the horse and I’ve been really happy with his efforts so far.”
