The Roy Rogers trained Hoi An ($13) upstaged Ex Sport Man ($3) in the Group 3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes at Ascot, beating the Steve Wolfe trained favourite home by half a length.
In their previous clash, two weeks ago, Ex Sport Man emerged the winner of the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate over 1200m with Hoi An, who chased from the worst of the draw that day, finishing a distance eight lengths back.
Again, Hoi An got no favours with the barrier draw here but, this time, stepping up to 1400m for the first time, the daughter of Longma turned the tables on the Magic Millions WA Two-Year-Old Classic and Karrakatta Plate winner to take her race record to three wins from only six starts, with two minor placings.
Hoi An won her Maiden at her second start and then jumped straight into Listed company, finishing third behind the useful Liwa in the Supremacy Stakes over 1000m. Liwa also finished behind Hoi An in this latest win.
Rogers upped the ante again in Hoi An’s next start and came away victorious in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes over 1100m before her only unplaced, well below par run in the Karrakatta Stakes, but she bounced back big time here to land her second Group 3 win in her last three starts.
Jockey Shaun O’Donnell has partnered her in both Group 3 wins.
