Doubts have emerged over whether Sydney Cup contender Campaldino will take his place in Saturday’s $2 million Sydney Cup at Randwick.
The stayer was found to have a cardiac arrhythmia during a routine veterinary examination ahead of the two-mile feature, placing his participation in jeopardy.
Veterinarians have since ordered further testing, including blood analysis to assess cardiac troponin levels, in order to determine the extent of the issue.
Co-trainer Adrian Bott has been advised that Campaldino must satisfy Racing Australia’s strict protocols relating to first-time cases of arrhythmia before being cleared to race.
Provided the results from the blood tests and a resting ECG fall within acceptable limits, the gelding will then be required to complete a supervised 1000m gallop on Thursday morning under official observation.
Campaldino is currently on the third line of betting at $8 following his runner-up finish in the Chairman’s Handicap at Randwick last Saturday.
