Veteran stayer and crowd favourite Harntell is set to have his last run during the Flemington carnival.
The four time G1 winner had his first start in Australia in the G1 Chipping Norton Stakes in early 2015 where he ran a close second he went on to win the Sky High Stakes and the G1 BMW in his first preparation.
The 9yo has rarely put in a bad run throughout his 44 starts in the country and was once touted as the horse to dethrone Winx in the Cox Plate but was beaten eight lengths albeit running second.
Hartnell ran a luckless ninth in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup and will be targeted at the WFA Mackinnon Stakes during Melbourne Cup week.
“it’s getting towards the end for Hartnell and it has been discussed that his next start would probably be his last.
“We’re going to take him to the Mackinnon, back to Flemington, 2000m at WFA.
“He will be dropping back in distance and he will enjoy his preferred gap of three weeks.
“It would be a wonderful send off if he could hit the front and the crowd roared for him like they did in the Turnbull.
“Hartnell has done a wonderful job for the stable and he has been one Godolpin’s most superior WFA horses to ever race in Australia – if not the most superior.” James Cummings said speak on After The Last.
